Reconnaissance: In August 2009, the founders went on a trip through the region to visit the people and see the villages to plan how to most efficiently bring medical care. The terrain is characterized by shallow tidal waters, mangrove forests, coral reefs, thick bush, Somali shifters (bandits) and an intense rainy season – simply getting to the villages requires careful planning and would be extremely difficult without the collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Services who assisted with security guards through the risk zones and WWF who helped with accommodation and vehicles. On this trip the we met with Anne Spoerry’s old patients and set up logistic arrangements with local village chiefs and helpers. (click here to visit the gallery)

The Launch 2010: In January 2010, after months of preparation and collaboration with Lamu District Hospital, the first dhow with a medical team set sail. We brought a team of clinical officers, nurses, medical workers, and representatives from the hospital. The team visited 10 villages and saw more than 1,000 patients.
